A Joint Initiative to Support the Labour Market Integration of Internationally Educated Nurses

Building on the success of our previous Employment Social Development Canada (ESDC) funded initiative in Ontario, our team is expanding efforts to support the employment integration of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) in three additional provinces: British Columbia (BC), Saskatchewan (SK), and Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). Through a cross-provincial strategy, we are accelerating the integration of newly licensed and temporarily licensed IENs into Canada’s healthcare system by aligning real-time labour market data with the skills and preferences of newcomer nurses.

Key Features of Our Strategy:

  • Customized Employment Support: Offering individualized job search assistance, resume feedback, and interview preparation to IENs based on their career goals and provincial context.

  • Labour Market Mapping & Analysis: Conducting real-time analysis of nursing vacancies across ON, BC, SK, and NL to identify opportunities aligned with IEN supply and immigration profiles.

  • Partnership with Employers: Engaging directly with healthcare organizations to match work-ready IENs to vacancies, share best practices for recruitment and retention, and increase employer readiness.

  • Cross-Provincial Research & Collaboration: Studying and comparing provincial strategies to create a pan-Canadian model for rapid IEN employment integration, supported by a national repository of tools and resources.

  • Workshops for IENs and Employers: Delivering targeted, small-group sessions to support IENs’ transition into the workforce and equip healthcare leaders with inclusive hiring strategies.

This initiative will not only increase commensurate employment among IENs but also address persistent barriers such as underemployment, systemic bias in hiring, and limited access to professional networks. By fostering collaboration across provinces, we aim to create more equitable, efficient, and sustainable pathways to licensure and employment for internationally educated nurses.
