In partnership with VHA Home HealthCare, this project aims to increase the diversity of the health workforce and respond to the changing demographics of the Canadian population by building the capacity of internationally educated nurses (IENs), a systemically disadvantaged group. The team will co-design, implement and evaluate a workforce solution in Alberta and Ontario to accelerate the recruitment and retention of IENs in the home, community and long-term care sectors. The project will generate evidence of the solution’s efficacy, create a more inclusive health workforce and improve care for diverse populations.
A retention model will be developed that focuses on hiring IENs and addressing the spectrum of their needs, including career planning, personal improvement, matched hiring, and extended orientation. Additionally, the project will encourage collaboration and engagement among researchers, the health workforce, decision-makers and patients. Our knowledge mobilization strategy includes the retention model and aligns research with policy and practice to enhance outcomes for IENs.
